Protected areas are the cornerstones of conservation policies worldwide. However, only few researches are led to analyse the way they emerge, except for criticising top-down governmental choices. Yet, the historical approach and strategic analysis of public policy building over the long term allows a better understanding of the stakes of action capacity of these policies. We therefore mobilize the advocacy coalition framework to show that protected areas creation is always due to coalitions of actors who belong to different professional fields and act at different scales but nevertheless share common stakes. On the basis of a comparative study in French and Brazilian Amazon, we show that if all coalitions for protected areas share a common objective of limited deforestation, they are still very different according to the type of conservation they promote (strict biodiversity conservation, population-based conservation or sustainable forest management). We also show that the ability of the coalitions to build efficient public policies is highly depending on internal factors (i.e. their ability to gather strategic resources) and on external factors (i.e. socio-political context and international pressure). Finally, the comparative analysis of coalitions pleading for the same type of protected areas in two different countries allows us to insist on the importance of qualitative embedded researches when it comes to understand why some protected areas have more chances to reach environmental effectiveness in one socio-political context than in another one.

Wildland recreation that does not involve animal harvests (non‐consumptive recreation) often influences various components of natural systems, including soils, water, air, soundscapes, vegetation, and wildlife. The effects of non‐consumptive recreation on wildlife have typically been assessed at spatial scales that are not only much smaller than the overall distributions of this disturbance but also much smaller than the areas that species use during a season or year. This disparity in scales has prevented effective assessment and management of broad‐scale recreation disturbance for many species, especially wildlife. We applied three software systems (ArcGIS, FRAGSTATS, and Conefor) to demonstrate how metrics commonly measured by landscape ecologists can be used to quantify broad‐scale patterns of non‐consumptive recreation. Analysts can employ such metrics to develop predictive models of how recreation disturbance – by itself and in additive or interactive combinations with other landscape characteristics – may affect wildlife responses across large areas. In turn, these models can inform decision making in broad‐scale recreation management.

Litter left behind on tourist trails is a persistent problem in national parks, regardless of the country in which the park is situated. The present article analyses the amount of waste on tourist trails in the most popular natural park in Poland, Tatra National Park (TNP), a small area of a mountainous character which is heavily used by tourists. Tourists who use the Tatra trails leave from 140 to 180 m 3 solid waste there per year. Its presence in parks, as well as being unsightly, is a potential risk for fauna and flora. 90% of the waste collected from the trails in TNP is hard or non-biodegradable waste. The waste from TNP's tourists trails needs to be considered in its totality, as recyclable fractions make up about 70% of all rubbish disposed of, and so areas such as TNP should be subject to organized waste management. It was found that the particular strategy implemented significantly affects the amount of waste from the tourist trails that is actually collected and disposed of. The key element for the efficient functioning of the waste-management strategy is the consistent implementation of an action plan that takes into account the specific nature of the area and the principles under which it is made available to tourists. Particularly significant are the frequency and regularity with which rubbish is removed. Moreover, there is a need to raise public awareness regarding waste left on tourists trails in TNP.
