Enhancing the solar still yield by increasing the surface area of water—A review

Abstract: This article reviews different methods employed to enhance the yield of solar still by increasing the surface area of water. As the area of stacked water increases, there is a greater possibility of an increase in temperature of the water and hence the evaporation rate from the top layer of basin water. Wick materials-though there may be evaporation rate and have a good capillary effect to absorb the saline water, intolerable smell, and turbidity-contribute to increased operational and maintenance cost. Use of… Show more

“…For maximum productivity this must be close to the latitude angle of the site . Several factors were found to enhance the productivity, such as the increase in evaporation rate using wick materials . The use of graphite and copper oxide as nanoparticles ameliorated the productivity by 57.6 and 47.8% respectively, while the glass cover of the still is cooled by film cooling , an increase of 50.3% more than the conventional solar still when flake graphite nanoparticles were used , Ding uses a nano ratchet, multilayer graphene with cone‐shaped nanopores (MGCN), which creates a difference in pressure which accelerates the vapor generation, an increase of at least 15 times .…”

“…However, their main disadvantage is low distillate output per unit area . Therefore, the distillation efficiencies associated with solar stills are significantly low . Many researchers have indicated a strong possibility of solar stills technical and economic viability in arid regions and isolated areas where complex technological installations and grid connectivity are not possible .…”
