Enhancing the removal of atrazine from soils by electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation using ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)

“…Chirakkara et al [15] and Acosta-Santoyo et al [16] applied the combined EKPR technology to a mixed contaminated soil (by heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), although they did not find a significant improvement in the removal efficiency as compared to that of phytoremediation experiments. However, we have recently shown that a moderate electric field (1-2 V cm -1 ) can significantly improve the atrazine removal by maize and ryegrass [17][18][19]; Rocha et al [20] have reported an enhancement of removal efficiency and plant biomass by using EKPR with reversal polarity and maize for the treatment of a soil spiked with petroleum. Based on the success of the application of EKPR to atrazine-spiked soils using ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) [19], in this work we report the application of EKPR to a low permeability soil spiked with atrazine using a mesocosm that contained 0.386 m 3 of soil planted with ryegrass. This plant species was selected mainly due to its fine and profuse fasciculated root system which can maximize the surface area in contact with the soil; so, it results in an ideal vegetative cover for the in situ treatment of contaminated soils [29].…”
