Enhancing the Mechanical Properties of Waterborne Polyurethane Paint by Graphene Oxide for Wood Products

Abstract: Water-based polyurethane paint is widely used for wood furniture by virtue of the eco-friendliness, rich gloss, and flexible tailorability of its mechanical properties. However, its low solution (water or alcohol) resistance and poor hardness and wear resistance limit its application. The emerging graphene oxide has a high specific surface area and abundant functional groups with excellent mechanical properties, endowing it with great potential to modify waterborne polyurethane as a nanofiller. In this study, … Show more

“…The requirements for the flatness and roughness uniformity of the substrate are relatively high [ 45 , 46 ]. As a protective coating, it is often subject to friction, impact, tension, and other forces, so the coating film is required to have necessary mechanical properties [ 47 , 48 ]. The mechanical characteristics of the coating film of the andoung wood surface are summarized in Table 9 .…”

“…In another study by Xu et al [6], the use of graphene oxide as an addition to polyurethane paints used for finishing furniture resulted in a significant increase in the hardness of the coating and scratch resistance. In turn, Han et al [7] focused on analyzing the impact of graphene oxide on changes in the flammability of wood, indicating that it may play an important role in fire protection.…”

“…However, biodegradable plastics have limitations in practicality due to difficulty in molding or poor physical properties [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Accordingly, the current trend has been progressively towards extensive research on waterborne polyurethane (WPU) as a replacement for solvent-borne polyurethanes (PUs) [ 7 , 8 ]. Waterborne polyurethane (WPU) has been substituted in existing PUs involved in the issue of organic solvents due to the increasing attention to health and environmental issues.…”
