Enhancing the intercultural competence of postgraduate logisticians

Abstract: This paper reports a national survey of logisticians studying for Masters awards at three UK universities which service increasing global demands by aspiring logisticians seeking enhanced competence to manage international supply chains. Initial longitudinal surveys at one university, later extended to several universities nationally, canvassed the opinions of postgraduate logisticians both at enrolment and several months afterwards, regarding approaches which might enhance their intercultural competence skill… Show more

“…The graduate student body has become more diverse as more students seek to obtain graduate degrees from universities abroad (Blumenfield and Nerad, 2012; Walsh, 2010; Young et al , 2013). Focusing on master’s students in logistics in British universities, Pyne et al (2007) found that enhancing students’ intercultural competence requires well-designed opportunities to encourage social interactions between students of different cultural backgrounds and language proficiency. Using a mixed-methods approach, Young et al (2013) studied factors related to the successful integration of international graduate students in British universities and found a positive correlation between student intercultural competence and academic success, as well as non-academic well-being.…”

“…Pyne et al reported findings from a longitudinal survey, where they collected opinions about "approaches which might enhance their intercultural competence" [13] of postgraduate logisticians at their point of enrolment and several months of work experience. The goal of their study is to test the importance of socio-cultural and language-related variables, comparing different years of the survey and nationality groups.…”

“…Skills can be introduced through cases, lectures, quizzes, tours, etc. In addition, educators can provide greater skills awareness and competency development by exposing students to stimulating group work and special projects (Pyne, Dinwoodie, and Roe, 2007;Yi, 2012). This can also be accomplished through supply chain simulations and logistics case competitions, student organization activities involving real-world projects, professional development events (e.g.…”
