In recent years Saudi Arabia has launched many campaigns to promote a model of global excellence to be a pioneer in future growth. As part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s National Vision 2030, the country encourages the improvement of national quality services based on the commitment of the government to build up a prosperous country, starting with the valorisation of local traditions. In particular, the Saudi, Arab, and Islamic heritage, built by an ancient civilisation and deeply rooted in the country’s history, is currently valorised to strengthen the national identity of local Arab values. The country aspires to preserve heritage sites and the local environment by promoting hospitality services for tourism. In the last years, Muslim pilgrims and all visitors to heritage sites entering the country from abroad have reached eight million people, tripling the numbers in the last decade. The government has started many initiatives and promoted many urban planning processes, programmes, and projects to enhance the touristic offer. The intent is to reach a sustainable approach to target the healthy growth of the country and the Saudi Arabian cities. The article presents some interventions that are currently under development to pursue the Saudi Vision 2030 and its goals. The recent third expansion of the Two Holy Mosques, the modernization of national airports, and the Mecca Metro project to complement the railroad and train public transportation offer will be presented and discussed as part of the national strategy to achieve a sustainable economy and tourism.

Tourists visiting urban heritage sites are guided by constructed itineraries that are shaped by a coherent spatial structure. This article studies the shaping of these itineraries in the heritage city of Al-Ula, using space syntax technique. The main hypothesis is that a placemaking approach of a destination based on its specificities will be able to contribute to the tourism development and place attractiveness. Building on previously developed place-making models, this study focuses on how a well-accessed and linked heritage site can be modelled and evaluated via Space Syntax measures to improve the quality of tourists' spatial experience. As the use of space syntax was found to be a useful technique for analysing tourists' itineraries and the factors that affect it; This study uses it to suggest the most appropriate pedestrian walkway given the various constraints of the existing historic fabric and to identify multiple measures of a destination's assessment. These measures have been noted in the previously developed models. The adopted measures that address access & linkage parameters include connectivity, integration, choice, and legibility. The findings explain that the adoption of access & linkage parameters contribute to revitalising the place in the sense of connecting the entire heritage site and enhancing the visitors experience.

The accelerating competition among cities brought on by globalization has resulted in a significant concern to harness cultural assets heritage recovery as a form of placemaking to establish relative competitive advantage and consequently attract more visitors and cultural tourism. It is evident that the physical heritage assets and cultural expressions play a substantial part in establishing a sense of place. Other factors related to the needs of tourists and visitors affect the degree of attractiveness and foster greater attachment to the place. In that sense, developing such heritage sites requires a comprehensive approach that considers various aspects in both tangible "physical" and intangible "unphysical" factors related to those spaces in which it creates authenticity and sense of place. This research attempts to explore the notion of placemaking as an approach for developing and conserving heritage sites, hence, promoting successful cultural tourism that balances the development between people and place. The research will consider using a qualitative approach, supported by statistical analysis through conducting a structured questionnaire for experts in the field in order to verify and weighing the importance of proposed qualities that contribute to building the suggested model. The research will result in demonstrating the proposed model of placemaking that is specialized for heritage sites, which it aims to achieve prosperous cultural tourism.
