Developers produce a lot of code and most of them have to merge it to what already exists. The required time to perform this programming task is thus dependent on the access speed to information about existing code. Classic IDEs allow displaying textual representation of information through features like navigation, word searching or code completion. This kind of representation is not effective to represent links between code fragments. Current graphical code representation modules in IDE are suited to apprehend the system from a global point of view. However, the cognitive integration cost of those diagrams is disproportionate related to the elementary coding task. Our approach considers graphical representation but only with code elements that are parts of the developer's mental model during his programming task. The corresponding cognitive integration of our graphical representation is then less costly. We use UML for this representation because it is a widespread and well-known formalism. We want to show that dynamic diagrams, whose content is modified and adapted in real-time by monitoring developer's actions can be of great benefit as their contents are perfectly suited to the developer current task. With our live diagrams, we provide to developers an efficient way to navigate through textual and graphical representation.

The increasing popularity of model-based and lowcode platforms has raised the need to understand large models -especially in industrial settings. However, current approaches mainly rely on graph-based visual metaphors, which do not scale well with large model sizes. To address this issue, we introduce model sensemaking strategies: purposeful model visualisations based on alternative visual metaphors. We define them as reusable patterns that yield tailored visualisations when applied to meta-models. This paper presents a catalogue of domain-specific and domain-agnostic sensemaking strategies, and a recommender that suggests suitable strategies for a given meta-model. To showcase the framework's applicability, we have implemented some of these strategies in Dandelion, an industrial, low-code graphical language workbench for the cloud. Using this platform, we have evaluated the effectiveness of the strategies to visualise large industrial models by the UGROUND company.

Model-Based Software Engineering (MBSE) has a high potential to play a critical role in the whole process of software engineering, bringing many benefits to all stakeholders, yet it is not used by most software developers today, due to both lack of tool capabilities and poor user experience (UX) of tools. This study aims to understand the evaluation types and methods applied by researchers when studying UX in modeling tools (modeling experience or MX) and the types of issues uncovered in these studies. We conducted a literature review using a snowballing approach to gather all studies of this topic. A total of 41 research papers were reviewed. Data extraction was performed based on research questions and a categorization of discussed issues was presented. Several gaps and future opportunities were identified and discussed, which include 1) utilizing interview method in research design; 2) distributing testing tasks based on user profiles; 3) involving UX experts in analysis; 4) scalability testing using large models; 5) assessing MX in areas other than just usability and utility; 6) considering collaborative modeling as an important factor contributing to MX; 7) considering both language issues and tool issues in UX evaluation of software modeling tools. 8) improving the taxonomy of MX challenges; 9) triangulating using multiple methods; and 10) developing and validating MX tool design heuristics.
