Enhancing the antibacterial activity of the gold standard intracanal medicament with incorporation of silver zeolite: An in vitro study

Abstract: Background:Enterococcus faecalis is a persistent organism that plays a major role in the etiology of persistent periradicular lesions after root canal treatment has been associated with different forms of periradicular disease including primary endodontic infections and persistent infections. The present study compares the antibacterial activities of calcium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide mixed with silver zeolite, and calcium hydroxide mixed with 2% chlorhexidine against E. faecalis using direct contact test.Ma… Show more

“…The antimicrobial agents used in this study were calcium hydroxide and Aloe vera . Calcium hydroxide is the gold standard of intracanal medicament [ 31 ]. These materials can damage the cell wall of the bacteria or cause denaturation of proteins and DNA which causes bacterial death [ 32 , 33 ].…”

“…Another study by Ghatole et al prepared calcium hydroxide with silver zeolite. 83 Once again, this formulation yielded the most significant antimicrobial activity among the tested formulations. Thus it seems the conundrum of microbial resistance to the gold standard-calcium hydroxide, may in fact be solved.…”

“…This study demonstrated this formulation as having the most significant antimicrobial activity when compared to calcium hydroxide and CHX alone, or in combination. Another study by Ghatole et al prepared calcium hydroxide with silver zeolite . Once again, this formulation yielded the most significant antimicrobial activity among the tested formulations.…”

“…Among intracanal medicaments, the gold standard is calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH) 2 ). [ 21 ] Its antimicrobial activity is linked to the hydroxyl ions release under aqueous conditions. These hydroxyl ions are powerful antioxidants and mediate bactericidal effect via damage to cytoplasmic membranes, proteins, and bacterial DNA.…”
