Enhancing speed management by in-car speed assistance systems

Abstract: Intelligent speed adaptation (ISA) systems support drivers to comply with the legal speed limits. This functionality is expected to become increasingly important in speed management if integrated well with more traditional speed management measures. Based on state-of-the-art scientific literature, this study describes the current knowledge on the effects of ISA and the willingness of stakeholders to adopt ISA. Although the expected effects of the various ISA types are promising and stakeholders are willing to … Show more

“…ISA systems use vehicle location information, driving speed, and an underlying database to determine the relationship between the vehicle speed and the speed limit for the road on which a driver is travelling (Marchau et al 2010). If the driver is speeding, the systems are designed to give in-vehicle feedback (visual, auditory, and/or haptic) to the driver.…”

“…However, effective speed management strategies can also be based on other approaches, such as the treatment of road infrastructures (Mountain et al, 2005;Grundy et al, 2009;Jurewicz, 2009;Isebrands and Hallmark, 2012;Yannis et al, 2013). In the field of automotive technology, the introduction of speed adaptation systems or speed limiters in cars could have positive effects on safety (Marchau et al, 2010). According to Hickman et al (2012) speed limiters have resulted in reductions of the number of crashes for commercial vehicles.…”

“…VMS is commonly used for informing drivers of the optimal speed limit in these systems. With the deployment of automated highway systems in the 1990s, many studies focused on intelligent speed adaptation systems, which adjust the vehicle's speed by detecting surrounding vehicles to improve driving comfort and safety [11, 12]. Although the feasibility and benefit of speed guidance have been proven on a freeway, the difference between freeway and signalised urban road blocks the direct application of DSG in signalised intersections.…”
