Enhancing Scientific Research Opportunities and E-Learning by Integrating Large Medical ISs

Abstract

Healthcare facilities in the world have several large information systems such as PACS, HIS, RIS, etc. These information systems store a huge amount of medical and personal information. Integrating these systems could provide many new opportunities, including knowledge management, training, telemedicine, etc. These days, we are witnessing the pandemic of the new COVID-19 virus and the fact that the problems caused by this virus have not been sufficiently investigated. In order to adequately respond to such situations, it is necessary to have timely, accurate, consolidated, and sorted data. This paper presents the possibilities of obtaining this information from already existing information systems as well as challenges and requirements it sets. On the other hand, specific standards are proposed to be met for e-learning purposes, as well as training for medical staff. Integration can also be bidirectional with the help of telemedicine in remote locations such as inaccessible areas, islands, or overseas ships in order to provide better medical care.
