Enhancing Long-term Children to Robot Interaction Engagement through Cloud Connectivity

Abstract: In this paper, we introduce a cloud-based structure to enhance long-term engagement in a pet-robot companion treatment to reduce stress an anxiety to hospitalized children. Cloud connectivity enables to combine human intervention with artificial intelligent multi-agent to bias the Robot Companion behavior in order to foster a better engagement and decrease the drop out during the treatment.

“…verbal interaction, active gesturing, physical contact) is important to be structured if our intent is children with ASD to gain social interaction and skills (Yuen et al, 2014). Teamwork strategies are strongly recommended to be presented by visual stimuli in order for the participation of children with ASD to be effective Albo-Canals et al, 2015). Specific strategies that could impose a specific structure on how children with ASD could interact with peers during teamwork inclusive educational robotic activities need to be developed especially for children with ASD in Level 2 that need substantial support for effective collaboration (American Psychiatric Association, DSM 5, 2013).…”

“…The European Commission's Robotics for Healthcare Roadmap defines healthcare robotics as "the domain of systems able to perform coordinated mechatronic actions (force or movement exertions) on the basis of processing of information acquired through sensor technology, with the aim to support the functioning of impaired individuals, medical interventions, care and rehabilitation of patients and also to support individuals in prevention programs". A particularly prominent area of development are healthcare robots that interact cognitively and socially with humans in healthcare environments, including, for example, projects that aim to foster child well-being in medical facilities through engagement with pet robots [20], provide robots for assistance or companionship in elderly care [19] or employ robots for educational purposes [21].…”
