Enhancing Learning Performance and Motivation of Cultural Heritage Using Serious Games

Abstract: In recent years, more serious games are used in different learning areas to improve the process of knowledge acquisition and learning outcomes. This study discusses a game mode based on a jigsaw puzzle with scaffolding-aid for cultural heritage learning. A case study using an historical pattern from China examines the effectiveness of improving learning performance and motivation. By using this game in an experimental setting in comparison with traditional video learning, this paper observes and evaluates the … Show more

“…In summary, eye tracking can be used to provide evidence for the effectiveness of the learning process in puzzle-based games and their learning outcomes (Tsai et al, 2012). Especially in the field of cultural heritage, visual attention can not only identify users’ differences in perception of art (Duchowski, 2002), but also provide evidence for the impact of game content and interaction mode on cognitive process (Ye et al, 2021). Therefore, this study will use eye-tracking technology to pay more attention to the impact of a puzzle-based game with scaffolding aid on the visual attention of learners and discuss the visual behavior in the process of the game in detail.…”

“…Due to the use of advanced 3D technologies, the rich cultural heritage can be preserved and activated 9 . In previous studies, for example, digital interactive technologies such as VR/AR and serious games were used directly in interactive media to present and disseminate cultural heritage content 10–14 . However, the majority of these interactive media primarily focus on providing high‐quality 3D renderings of artifacts or immersive virtual spaces in which users can freely travel or observe.…”

The lack of an authentic and engaging experience in these mediums makes it difficult to stimulate visitors' interest and inspire learning.…”
