Purpose of the study: This study aims to identify the effects of WhatsApp in teaching narrative writing to Grade 6of primary school pupils in the aspect of vocabulary and grammar. Methodology: Eight pupils of Grade 6 from one primary school in Negeri Sembilan were involved and data were collected through document analysis, focus group interviews and field notes. Main Findings: The findings of the post-test revealed that the vocabulary aspect has significantly improved as 75% of the participants showed an increase of one and two marks while the aspect of grammar was not found to have any effect as only one participant who represented 12% of the participants showed slight improvement from 12 to 13 marks. Applications of this study: The findings of this study are hoped to shed some light on how the educators could manipulate the functions of mobile messaging apps in teaching English particularly the skill of writing. Novelty/Originality of study: The pupils’ motivation to learn narrative writing could be enhanced through the use of WhatsApp rather than writing conventionally using pencil and paper.

The integration of technology in language classroom is a prerequisite in the twenty-first century teaching. Social media as part of technology advancement has a great potential to improve students’ motivation and the efficacy of learning a language. Therefore, the present study sheds light on the effect of the use of Instagram on ESP students’ writing ability. It involved 36 Indonesian ESP students majoring in Sharia Banking of a university in Surakarta Indonesia. The pre-experimental research was conducted in eight meetings, including the writing pre-test and post-test. The students were assigned to write a descriptive essay by means of Instagram as the instructional medium. A questionnaire was also given to reveal their perceptions toward the use of Instagram to practice writing. The result of the data analysis showed that there was a significant difference on the students’ writing scores between the pre-test and the post test. The finding of this study is expected to provide significant contribution to the realm of English for specific purposes (ESP) teaching in Indonesia. Based on the findings, some insights are given for teachers and future researchers about the potential use of Instagram on the teaching of writing.

This research study aimed at revealing the strategies employed by successful English as a Foreign Language (EFL) doctoral candidates in accomplishing their dissertation writing and their perspectives in association with the stages of research report writing. This is a narrative qualitative inquiry, and the data were collected through an in-depth interview with ten successful EFL fresh graduates who had completed their dissertation writing within six and seven semesters. Using a retrospective technique, the respondents were asked to recall their experiences and activities during the process of writing their dissertation. The results reveal that the successful doctoral candidates used four main strategies of dissertation writing: cognitive, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies. In completing each of the dissertation stages, the doctoral candidates spent much time reading a huge collection of research articles, writing their dissertation on a daily basis, and having intensive consultation with their advisors. This study would be useful for EFL doctoral students to avoid delay in completing their studies and to meet their academic timeline so that they can face their challenging dissertation writing to complete their study on time.
