“…Student-centred visual tools such as photo taking, illustrations and diary keeping have been used in the past to strengthen collaboration between the school and home. They also allow for greater insight for both parents and teachers into child needs (Yuen, 2011), and provide age-centred understandings of the home environment that may not be captured through interviews alone (Jorgenson and Sullivan, 2010). However, previous research into the impact of school behaviours on the home is primarily parent-based (Gadhoke et al, 2015; Rausch et al, 2015) and researchers recognise the challenges in exploring this relationship (Baranowski et al, 2000; Lytle et al, 2006; Reynolds et al, 2000).…”

“…Experts on home-school collaborations echo these benefits. For example, Yuen (2011) describes the ways in which increased parent-child communication about school increased parent knowledge about and comfort with the school program, which in turn increased the likelihood that parents would take a more active role in the classroom. Souto-Manning and Swickl (2006) propose additional ways in which effective communication benefits parents, including highlighting family and child strengths, including all parents, and enabling families to feel like partners in the education process.…”
