Enhancing Global Maximum Power Point of Solar Photovoltaic Strings under Partial Shading Conditions Using Chimp Optimization Algorithm

Abstract: This paper proposes the application of a metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the social behavior of chimps in nature, called Chimp Optimization Algorithm (ChOA), for the maximum power point tracking of solar photovoltaic (PV) strings. In this algorithm, the chimps hunting process is mathematically articulated, and new mechanisms are designed to perform the exploration and exploitation. To evaluate the ChOA, it is applied to some fixed dimension benchmark functions and engineering problem application of trackin… Show more

“…The efficiency of PV panels is affected by the connection of cells and hard environmental conditions that may cause different faults and degradation mechanisms, e.g., deposition of dust, corrosion, delamination, cracks or hot spots, among others, reducing operating performance of PV panels around 20% [4][5][6]. Fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) techniques are applied to develop preventive and predictive maintenance plans, avoiding PV performance reduction with lower operation and maintenance (O&M) costs [7,8]. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) acquires data, e.g., irradiation, power production, performance ratios, voltage and current, among others, from different types of condition monitoring systems (CMS) about the real state of PV panels [9].…”

“…This algorithm has been proven to be worth solving many complex engineering problems for its excellent balance between exploration and exploitation (Nagadurga et al. 2021 ; Pedram Haeri Boroujeni and Pashaei 2021 ). In this paper, we have used ChOA for image clustering using multilevel image thresholding technique.…”

“…As an alternative to standard photovoltaic MPPT approaches, the work given in [22] uses an opposition-based learning firefly algorithm (OFA) to improve the performance of solar systems under both uniform irradiance changes and partial shade circumstances. This article [23] proposes using the chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA), a metaheuristic algorithm inspired by chimps' natural social behaviour, to track the MPPT of solar PV strings. The article [24] discusses kinetic gas molecular optimization in terms of MPPT and maximum number of iterations (KGMO).…”
