Context.In developing countries there is a preference to grow food crops rather than forage. However, suitable food-fodder based systems ensure year-round green fodder availability for profitable livestock production. Aims. This study aimed to determine whether including single cut Egyptian clover (SEC) in the existing cropping systems could improve system productivity, forage availability and economic returns. Method. Nine SEC based cropping systems were tested in a randomised complete block design with three replications. Key results. Sorghum-SEC-wheat (late sown) cropping system produced 18% greater wheat equivalent yield compared with a popularly adopted sorghum-wheat system (8.9 Mg ha −1 ). The water productivity (1.80 kg m −3 ) of this system was also improved in the sorghum-multi-cut Egyptian clover system (1.74 kg m −3 ). There was a marginal increase in dry matter yield and crude protein content of the succeeding sorghum crop when it was rotated with Egyptian clover. The inclusion of Egyptian clover also improved the soil organic carbon (23%) and available nitrogen (15%) compared with cerealcereal systems. The findings identify a sustainable intensification option in the sorghum-based cropping system with short duration Egyptian clover (single cut) as an economically feasible and ecologically effective approach. Conclusion. Integration of single cut Egyptian clover in sorghumwheat rotation as a catch crop recorded greater system productivity, water-use efficiency and economic returns to achieve the sustainable crop intensification. Implication. The SEC can be an effective option for diversification and intensification of cropping systems to improve fodder availability, yield, boost income and improve soil health.

Ratooning is the cultivation practice of two harvests in one cropping season by producing a second crop from the original stubble, which could provide higher resource use efficiency and economic benefit compared with direct sown crops. Nitrogen (N) fertilizer and planting density (D) play a vital role in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) production; however, limited information is available on the effects on yield and quality of the sorghum-ratoon system. To address this question, field experiments were conducted with three N treatments (120 kg N ha–1, N1; 180 kg N ha–1, N2; and 255 kg N ha–1, N3) and three D treatments (82,500 plant ha–1, D1; 105,000 plant ha–1, D2; and 127,500 plant ha–1, D3). The yield of the main crop was significantly higher than that of the ratoon crop. Increasing N could increase the yield and yield attributes of both main and ratoon crops, and the effect on the ratoon crop was greater than the main crop. With increasing D, the grain yield of both main and ratoon crops increased, though 1,000-grain weight and grain weight per ear decreased. The sorghum grain of the ratoon crop contained higher starch, protein, and tannin contents but lower fat content, indicating a better quality for liquor production. The quality traits were significantly affected by N and D, but the differences between treatments were smaller than that between the main and ratoon crop. Our results indicated that increasing the yield of ratoon crops could obtain a high yield and quality of the sorghum-ratoon system. It was recommended that 120 kg N ha–1 with 127,500 plant ha–1 for the main crop and a small amount of N be top-dressed in three new buds left on stubble in each hill for the ratoon crop.

Objective: The objective of this study is to review the use of sorghum as a feed source for ruminants that it can developed on dry land.Results: Sorghum is a cereals that can grow on dry land. Sorghum is source of food, biofuel and animal feed. Sorghum plants have high nutritional value and can replace other feed sources, because they have a high chemical composition, vitamins, minerals, and energy content. Sorghum contains crude protein, fat and ash 9.9; 2.7 and 11.45% respectively. In fresh conditions, sorghum leaves and stems cannot last long, therefore it can be stored in silage to extend their shelf life so that they can be used in the dry season.Feeding leaves, straw, byproducts with sorghum have been positively influenced such as increased antilmytic effect in sheep, feed consumption, digestibility in livestock, rumen fermentation, VFA, pH-rumen, digestibility and feed efficiency of the feed of the animal also meat and milk production of goats.Conclusions: Sorghum is potentially produced as a feed source for ruminants due to good nutritional content and can be developed in dry land.
