Enhancing Flexibility of 2D Planar Materials By Applying Cut Patterns For Hands On Study Models

Abstract: Active experimentation during intertranslations between digital and physical modelling allow designers to explore new geometrical possibilities. Particularly, while changing the strength of the material, cut operations augment bending performance of the planar surfaces. Keeping in mind the potentiality of bending behavior as a generative tool for computational process, this paper presents the findings of three phased experimentation: implication of cut patterns to 2D planar material, mapping 2D patterns onto 3… Show more

“…The relationship between spacing between cuts and bending was also explored by Güelci, Bacinoglu, and Alaçam (2016). They also found that less space between cuts lead to greater bending.…”

“…To design free form surfaces by means of bending, lattice hinge creates heterogeneous surface properties through the use of linear gaps. 22 There should be a better understanding of the behaviour of the elements of a lattice hinge to have a better insight of its deformation. Figure 6 presents a lattice hinge which is bent after applying force to the two sides.…”

“…The results of our tests show us it is not the subtraction operation itself that increases the bending ability of the surface, but it is lay out pattern distribution that might increase the flexibility. In that way the planar surface begins to perform anisotropic behavior (Güzelci 2016).…”
