Enhancing fish performance in aquaculture

Abstract: Implications• Aquaculture is the fastest-growing global agricultural industry as a result of advances in fish genetics, nutrition, feeds, culture systems, and management.• The genetic and phenotypic diversity of fish has been capitalized to yield rapid gains in aquaculture production through a coordination of genetics, nutrition, and management such that aquaculture now produces more than half of the fish consumed by humans globally © Small, Hardy, and Tucker.

“…In the last few decades, the aquafeed industry has gone through major changes in diet formulation to enhance fish performance in culture systems and to promote sustainability of the growing aquaculture industry [1,2,3]. Increasing inclusion of plant-derived ingredients in lieu of marine-derived feedstuff in finfish diets is part of the initiatives to reduce aquaculture’s dependence on marine resources.…”

“…F isheries and aquaculture represent an important source of food, nutrition and employment for millions of people in the industrialised nations as well as many of those who struggle to maintain reasonable livelihoods in resource-limited countries (Al-Rasheed et al, 2018Klinger et al, 2017). The industry has become the fastest-growing agricultural industry due to recent advances in the genetic, nutritional as well as cultural and management systems (Small et al, 2016). The expansion of the aquaculture sector occasioned by the genetic improvements, especially in the production of hybrid fishes with improved desirable traits like flesh quality has made investments in the sector more profitable, hence the increase in demands for fish products (Guillen et al, 2019;Supartini and Yagi, 2018).…”
