Enhancing Detection of Gonococcus in Ejaculates of Adult Males Using Sperm Dilution

Abstract: Specific cultures were used to detect growth of Neisseria Gonorrhoeae (NG) in 90 ejaculates of partners of childless marriages. Although no gonococcal growth was observed in undiluted semen, 9 out of 68 subjects with silent infection presented growth of NG in seminal plasma after dilution 1:2 with saline. It is concluded that semen dilution increases the chances of detection of NG in semen samples of asymptomatic gonococci carriers.

“…Treatment failures are common in prostatitis. It was been hypothesized that altered pharmacokinetics in the inflamed prostate gland might account for the treatment failure of clinically diagnosed chronic bacterial prostatitis [24]. In a chronically inflamed prostate gland, another difficulty in eradicating bacteria relates to the fact that micro-organisms are protected within infection-induced microcolonies and biofilms and, therefore, grow firmly attached to the inflamed ductal and acinar walls [25].…”

“…In addition, an aliquot from all samples was cultured aerobically and anaerobically following a 1:2 dilution in saline solution, according to previously published standard bacteriological methods [3,24]. To minimize methodological errors, the same investigators, in a blinded fashion, performed all seminal analyses (E.V.…”

“…One aliquot from each sample was cultured aerobically and anaerobically after diluting the samples (1:2) in saline solution. Standard bacteriological methods were used to quantify and identify all organisms according to previously published methods (Vicari et al ., ). All study subjects were also tested for infection with Chlamydia and Mycoplasma by analysing cultures of urethral fluids that were obtained by prostate massage and collected using swabs.…”

“…Therefore, this condition was considered clinically as prostatitis stable compared with pretreatment phase with antibiotics. Standard bacteriological methods were used to quantify and identify all organisms, in one aliquot from each sample (derived from EPS or semen) cultured aerobically and anaerobically after diluting the samples (1:2) in saline solution, according to previously published methods 1920

Instead, progression into PV or PVE was located and verified when they showed clinical signs (palpation of tender prostate at the physical examination) and ultrasound findings considered indicative of PV or PVE, as previously described 21
