Enhancing an Automated Inspection System on Printed Circuit Boards Using Affine-SIFT and TRIZ Techniques

Abstract: Abstract. Automated visual inspection is an important step to assure the quality of printed circuit boards (PCB). Component placement errors such as missing, misaligned or incorrectly rotated component are major causes of defects on surface mount PCB. This paper proposes a novel automated visual inspection method for PCB. The proposed method uses a sequence of image processing techniques inspired by the theory of inventive problem solving (TRIZ) with Affine-SIFT image matching techniques to enhance the compone… Show more

“…Using the values in the confusion matrix, different parameters were calculated. Magnetic field [6] Machine vision based on Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) with blob analysis or Optical flow or Running average [7] Image The work was found to be very useful for the automation of manual labor based PCB assembly line at a much cheaper cost than available systems and it was found to be 85.7% accurate based on the test results. Few of the boards tested were defense grade boards, so the accuracy was key.…”

“…TRIZ is a Russian acronym for the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TIPS); it was developed by Genrich Altshuller in 1946. TRIZ was applied in many disciplines and showed some promising results [17][18][19][20][21]. TRIZ is known to provide a systematic approach to solve innovative problems.…”

“…Although many studies have been done on PCBs inspection, the issue of missing footprints has received less attention. When a "Printed Circuit Board" is created and released onto the market, the consumer of the board needs footprints (component shapes) in order to locate the location of the electronic component on the board [3,7].…”
