“…Polyamines and especially the thylakoid-associated polyamines play a decisive role in protecting photosynthetic apparatus against oxidative stress. He et al (2008) found that Put induced the changes of endogenous polyamines in the photosynthetic apparatus to some extent, might be involved in the reduction of H 2 O 2 contents and membrane lipid peroxidation under salt stress. This result is supported by our experiments that Put reduced the number of plastoglobuli resulting from gradual thylakoid membrane degradation induced by salinity (Unpublished data).…”

“…When the same gene was transformed into sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), the transgenic plants demonstrated more tolerance to salt and drought than the wild type (Kasukabe et al 2006). He et al (2008) reported changes in enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant capacity of the SPDS over expressing transgenic Pyrus communis in response to NaCl stress. Compared to wild type, the transgenic lines had higher activities of antioxidant enzymes, less H 2 O 2 and MDA content.…”

“…An ADC2 knockout mutant ( adc2 -1 ) was more sensitive to salt stress, which was reversed by exogenous Put (Urano et al 2004 ). In the same way, Arabidopsis He et al ( 2008 ) acl5 / spms mutant, defective for Spm production, is more sensitive to drought and salt stress, and Put application reverses the sensitivity to the defi ned abiotic stresses . Heterologous overexpression of PA genes, ADC/ODC/SAMDC/SPDS, which leads to accumulation of higher PA levels in transgenic plants, was found to make the transformed plants-Arabidopsis , rice, tobacco, and tomato-tolerant to abiotic stresses (Minocha and Sun 1997 ;Thu-Hang et al 2002 ;Kasukabe et al 2004 ;Wen et al 2008 ).…”
