Enhancement of Mica Paper Insulation Strength with Surface Modification

Abstract: Mica paper is made as one kind of insulation material, but low strength limits its applications. Surface modification is proved to be an effective way to enhance its strength. In this paper modifier like ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, cationic polyacrylamide, cationic starch, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid plus cationic polyacrylamide and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid plus cationic starch are introduced to improve strengths of mica paper. Finally ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid plus cationic starc… Show more

“…Mica is an important component of high‐voltage electrical insulation systems in many forms including mica tape, mica sheet, mica plate and mica tube. Mica paper is commonly composed of mica compounds with various morphologies including mine scrap or flake‐like pieces and can be prepared directly via the aid of a conventional Fourdrinier‐type papermaking machine . However, common pure mica paper cannot meet the requirements for some working conditions; for instance, lack of mechanical properties when used as an insulation winding for insulating machines .…”
