“…242,266 It has been shown that proton carriers, specifically aniline and benzylamine, enhance HER on Pt electrodes. 309 This is in agreement with the analysis by Savéant 242 and our experimental work on Au electrodes presented here in which current enhancement may be the result of the weak, carbonic acid catalyzed production of dihydrogen. 242…”

“…Once hydronium ions come into contact with the hydrophobic IL layer, protons are likely de-coordinated from water molecules and the isolated bare H + will transfer faster and receive electrons easier on the Pt nanoparticles surface, leading to promoted HER on IL@Pt/C. As for the protic IL [DBU-H][NTf 2 ], the protic cation in the IL adlayer not only effectively increases the local H + concentration and pro-vides more reactants at the Pt sites, but also behaves as a proton carrier, transporting protons from the bulk solution into the electric double layer at the metal-electrolyte solution interface, more exactly on the outer Helmholtz layer [19,24]. It seems that the neat protic IL [DBU-H][NTf 2 ] itself cannot transfer H + by proton hopping because there is almost no proton acceptor such as free amine due to its very high DpK a value.…”
