Enhancement of Glass Production Rate in Joule Heated Ceramic Melter

Abstract: In this research work, experimental studies and numerical simulation of Joule Heated Ceramic Melter (JHCM) used for vitrification of radioactive liquid waste (RLW) were carried out. The isolation of the long-lived radioactive isotopes by fixing them in suitable host matrix is the only practical approach adopted for conditioning of highly radioactive waste generated from the nuclear fuel cycle. RLW and preformed glass beads are added simultaneously on a molten glass pool maintained at 1000 °C in JHCM to form a … Show more

“…Common mathematical representations of glass melters compute temperature and velocity fields in the molten glass and the furnace atmosphere to optimize energy consumption and conditions for producing a homogeneous glass using production rate as an input and rather than as a result of the simulation 1–8 . This can only be achieved if the cold cap, a mass of reacting material that floats on the glass melt surface, is realistically described by a mathematical model that uses the reaction kinetics to describe the spatial distribution of feed‐to‐glass conversion inside the cold cap.…”
