Enhancement of central Λ, Ξ and yields in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 A GeV/c

Abstract: Pb interactions are presented as a function of the collision centrality and compared with those obtained from p-Pb collisions. Strangeness enhancement is observed which increases with centrality and with the strangeness content of the hyperon.

“…As the partons are deconfined, we expect this enhancement of strangeness production to be more pronounced for multi-strange particles, which can now be built using uncorrelated strange quarks which were produced in independent microscopic interactions: we therefore expect the enhancement to increase with the particles' strangeness content [8]. Indeed, such a pattern of strangeness enhancement has been observed by the WA97 and NA57 Collaborations in Pb-Pb collisions at the SPS at a beam momentum of 158 A GeV/c (√s NN = 17.3 GeV) [9,10,11]. The enhancement is defined as the yield per wounded nucleon relative to the yield per wounded nucleon in a light reference system (for instance pp or pBe): for a generic collision system AB the enhancement of a generic particle j is computed as:…”

“…The kinematical region is about one unit of rapidity centred at midrapidity and the p T starts from a few hundred MeV c −1 , depending on the particle type. The acceptance windows for the hyperons , and have been published for the Pb-Pb and the p-Pb set-up in [2]. The p-Be window is very similar to the p-Pb one.…”

“…The contributions of S 1 2 S 2 and S 2 2 S 1 were accounted for by assuming the same rapidity distributions as L 2 L and scaling the L 2 L distribution by an empirical factor 1.6 6 0.1 derived from hadronic reactions [21]. Multistrange baryons contribute less than 2% to B 2 B [22] and were not accounted for. The net baryon yield B 2 B was then calculated as B 2 B ͑2.07 6 0.05͒ ͑p 2 p͒ Figure 1, lower panel, shows the B 2 B rapidity distribution for Pb 1 Pb.…”
