Enhancement of bandgap emission of Pt-capped MgZnO films: Important role of light extraction versus exciton-plasmon coupling

Abstract: We present on a systematic study of the contribution of surface plasmon (SP) coupling and light extraction toward emission enhancement of Platinum (Pt) nano-patterns capped MgZnO films. Time resolved Photoluminescence (PL) results indicate that the Pt coating can greatly reduces the non-radiative recombination rate by passivation of surface states, making the decay slow down. Temperature dependence of the integrated photoluminescence intensity reveals that the Pt nano-patterns can offer a large amount of light… Show more

“…In theory, the IQE for the samples with and without Ag NPs (η* IQE and η IQE ) can be written as 9 where the F p = τ/τ* is a Purcell enhancement factor (F p = 1.52 in this work), which depicts the increase in spontaneous recombination rate. 31,32 According to our previous findings, the η IQE for ZnO nanostructures estimated from temperaturedependent PL spectra is around 12%. 8 A rough estimate, based on eq 5, shows that the η* IQE is 3.5 times as large as η IQE , which is in good agreement with the optimal 3.5-fold PL enhancement ratio, as shown in Figure 2.…”

“…Sample Au 8 has a much higher transmitance than sample Au 4 . The transmitance enhancement of Au 8 compared with Au 4 could be considered resulting from the coupling between localized surface plasmon (LSP) of Au particles and excitons in IZO films [16].…”

“…In contrast, the τ nr of the sample without Al nanorings was calculated as 0.28 ns, while that of the sample with Al nanorings was 0.36 ns. This result can be explained by the passivation of surface defects [30]. During the dry-etching process, the crystalline quality of the sample can be degraded by producing some defects at the surface.…”
