Enhancement of Anaerobic Digestion with Nanomaterials: A Mini Review

Abstract: In recent years, the number of articles reporting the addition of nanomaterials to enhance the process of anaerobic digestion has exponentially increased. The benefits of this addition can be observed from different aspects: an increase in biogas production, enrichment of methane in biogas, elimination of foaming problems, a more stable and robust operation, absence of inhibition problems, etc. In the literature, one of the current focuses of research on this topic is the mechanism responsible for this enhance… Show more

“…The highest emissions of methane, which is one of the most important greenhouse gases, accompany, to a large extent, the extraction of fossil fuels [1], the management of waste and wastewater, the decomposition of manure, and the combustion of biomass and biofuels. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is one of the most practical approaches constituting an alternative energy source to fossil fuel extraction [2,3]. It is also a well-tested strategy for managing agricultural and food waste.…”

“…In recent years, anaerobic digestion has undergone an unprecedented boost due to the search of renewable and locally-available sources of energy. , This increase has derived in the implementation of new anaerobic digesters, the search for additives to improve methane yield, such as biochar or nanomaterials, and a considerable number of recent publications on biogas upgrading research . Unfortunately, this boost has not been accompanied by a similar increment either in implementation or in research to find alternative ways to valorize the other product of anaerobic digestion: digestate.…”

“…Anaerobic digestion is a natural process that results in the production of biogas that can be a useful source of renewable energy. The production of methane from biogas has been reviewed from the point of view of operational strategies (Komilis et al, 2017) and the use of additives to increase the amount of biogas and its content in methane (Barrena et al, 2022). Methane, being the major component of natural gas, is a useful renewable source of energy when it comes from biogas.…”
