Enhancement in thermal and mechanical properties of bricks

Abstract: A new type of porous brick is proposed. Sawdust is initially well mixed with wet clay in order to create voids inside the brick during the firing process. The voids will enhance the total performance of the brick due to the reduction of its density and thermal conductivity and a minor reduction of its compressive stress. All these properties have been measured experimentally and good performance has been obtained. Although a minor reduction in compressive stress has been observed with increased porosity, this … Show more

“…A building material with proper physical and mechanical characteristics as well as thermal properties in respect to radiation will contribute towards controlling heat transmission through it. Decreasing thermal conductivity of material is the dominant factor in reducing heat that could be transferred to or from the building [1]. The components of the building envelope, which include walls, windows, doors, roofs, etc., represent the most expensive conduit of heat gain of the building.…”

“…Similarly, to further enhance the effectiveness as a thermal barrier, these cavities can be filled with other materials that possess even better properties to achieve this objective. Studies on incorporating waste materials into bricks is not new as this can help to reduce the amount of waste materials disposal at the same time [4,5].…”
