In this study, we report the synthesis of Zn0.075Cu0.025O films by chemical bath deposition to determine the effect of substrate (glass slide or ZnO seed layer) on the structural and H2 gas sensing properties of the produced films. The crystal phase, structural topography, surface morphology and functional groups of the as-synthesized films as well as H2 gas sensing properties were investigated. Although both films have a hexagonal wurtzite structure, ZnO seed layer-based Zn0.075Cu0.025O film is more crystalline than glass slide-based Zn0.075Cu0.025O films. ZnO seed layer-based Zn0.075Cu0.025O films exhibited much more nanorod and less nanosphere forms compared to glass slide-based Zn0.075Cu0.025O films. EDX analysis and Raman spectra of both samples confirmed the presence of defects in Cu:ZnO samples. ZnO seed layer-based sensors showed higher response (140%) and lower operating temperature (80°C) compared to glass slide-based sensors (87% response and 140°C operating temperature). The most important thing to note here is that the fabricated sensors exhibited high response at room temperature. The responses at room temperature was found as 46% and 23% for the ZnO seed layer-based and glass slide-based sensors, respectively. Sensors operating at room temperature are especially important for commercial applications.

Herein, SiO2 nanosheets with thicknesses of 25−100 nm are used to enhance the performance of Au/CdBr2 Schottky barriers. The Au/CdBr2/SiO2/Au straddling‐type heterojunction devices are prepared by the thermal evaporation technique. It is observed that SiO2 layers enhance the crystallinity of CdBr2 through increasing the crystallite sizes and decreasing the defect density, stacking faults, and microstrain by 50%, 56%, 32%, and 34%, respectively. A work function of 6.38 eV is determined from the temperature‐dependent electrical resistivity measurements of p − type CdBr2. In addition, it is observed that, when coated with 50 nm‐thick SiO2, the Au/CdBr2/SiO2/Au straddling‐type transistors can reveal high current rectification ratios of 6.9 × 102 at low biasing voltages in the range of 0.06−0.30 V. The alternating current signals’ analysis in the microwave range of spectra indicates that the current conduction mechanism is dominated by the correlated barrier hopping and quantum mechanical tunneling. It is observed that the Au/CdBr2/SiO2/Au devices exhibit a negative effect accompanied with resonance−antiresonance in the capacitance spectra. Moreover, the microwave cutoff frequency which reaches ≈165.1 GHz and the magnitude of reflection coefficient spectra show that the device under study can perform as multiband pass/stop filters suitable for wire/wireless communication applications including 3G/4G technologies.

In this paper, we study the effect of solution pH in the hydrothermal synthesis and post-annealing treatment on the photocatalytic performance of hexagonal prism ZnO grown without a seed layer. By varying the precursor molarity ratio, the solution obtained was 6.88 (ZnO-2), 7.00 (ZnO-1), and 7.58 (ZnO-3). The three samples show hexagonal prism ZnO with wurtzite structures based on scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction analysis. ZnO-1 samples could degrade methylene blue as high as 65.9% for a UV irradiation time of 5 hours, better than ZnO-2 (51.80%) and ZnO-3 (57.55%). Post-annealing treatment of ZnO-1 with the best photodegradation efficiency was carried out at 200°C (ZnO-4) and 400°C (ZnO-5) to alter the structure. The post-annealing treatment changes the domination of crystal orientation from (002) to (100) plane. Also, the morphology of ZnO-5 changed significantly to become smaller rods with a diameter of 2.79 µm, as compared to ZnO-1 (2.83 µm) and ZnO-4 (3.12 µm). It is due to ionic rearrangements occurring at higher temperatures. The ZnO-5 sample reduces methylene blue by 82.91%, which is better than ZnO-1 (65.9%) and ZnO-4 (64.39%). Interestingly, we found a relation between smaller rod diameters and higher photocatalytic activity. The results show the importance of the solution pH and the annealing treatment in improving the photocatalytic performance of hexagonal prism ZnO without the seed layer.
