Enhanced thermal properties in a hybrid graphene–alumina filler for epoxy composites

Perylene tetracarboxylic anhydride (PTCDA) was reacted with 6-aminocaproic acid to form the corresponding perylene bisimide (PBI). PBI was used as foundation an oligomerisation of glycidol in a ring-opening reaction of glycidol leading to a hyper branched, water soluble glycidol derivative of perylene (PBI-HPG). PBI-HPG was bound to the reduced graphene oxide via π-π stacking resulting in a compound termed PBI-HPG/RGO. The structure and morphology of PBI-HPG/RGO were investigated by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), wide angle X-ray diffractometry (WAXD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscope (AFM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). PBI-HPG/RGO was blended into at different loadings in order to improve the thermal and mechanical properties of epoxy composites. The maximum Tg of the epoxy composites was about 20 o C and the decomposition temperature (Td) was 26 o C higher than that of neat epoxy. The incorporation of PBI-HPG/RGO yields a material with an impact strength of 39.6 KJ/m 2 and a tensile strength at 0.7 wt%. It increased by 50.8% and 62.3%, respectively, compared to the neat epoxy. The efficient management of heat is a key issue when considering the performance of electrical devices. To reduce the probability of their failure an effective heat dissipation should be ensured. The thermal conductivity of pure epoxy is low and can be improved through the addition of fillers. Graphene has been considered as an adequate filler, due to its excellent thermal conductivity. However, graphene‐based composites also show a high electrical conductivity, which limits their application as an electrical insulation considerably. The presented work shows that it is possible to enhance thermal conductivity through the incorporation of a new class of hybrid filler, namely a masterbatch of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) and a standard filler like silica. This unique structural design combines the advantages of both, GNPs and silica powder, resulting in composites that not only show high thermal conductivity, but also preserve electrical insulation functionality. A modified processing method leads to the improvement of thermal conductivity. GNPs‐silica hybrid epoxy composites with only 2 wt% of GNPs reached 1.54 W/mK, whereas the volume resistivity remained at the level of 1015 Ω cm. The unique scientific aspect, namely temperature dependence of thermal conductivity, was studied. The presented novel hybrid composites show great potential in applications requiring electrical insulation with enhanced thermal conductivity in high voltage devices. POLYM. In this paper, a series of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) was synthesized under different thermal oxidation etching temperatures and epoxy/g-C 3 N 4 composites were prepared via solution blending. The morphology and structure of g-C 3 N 4 were investigated by transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The tensile fracture morphology and structure of epoxy resin (EP) composites were demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy and XRD, respectively. Mechanical properties of EP composites were characterized by tensile testing, and the thermal performances were investigated by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and thermal gravimetric analysis. The results revealed that the active groups on g-C 3 N 4 sheets increased under thermal oxidation etching and the C to N ratio of g-C 3 N 4 decreased from 0.94 to 0.76 with the increasing etching temperature. Noticeably, the tensile strength of EP composites was enhanced by 58% with the addition of C 3 N 4 -NS-500 and the thermal properties were also improved significantly, including T 0.5 (the decomposition temperature at the mass loss of 50%) increased by 21.5 C and glass transition temperature improved by 8 C. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
