Enhanced therapeutic effect of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization combined with radioactive I‑125 seed implantation on liver cancer

Abstract: The present study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) combined with radioactive I-125 (iodine-125) seed implantation on liver cancer. A total of 38 liver cancer patients in the combined treatment group were treated with lobaplatin-TACE combined with radioactive I-125 seed implantation, while 45 patients in the TACE group were treated only with lobaplatin-TACE. Patients were followed up for survival time, and the liver function, change in α-fetoprotein (AF… Show more

“…A total of 573 articles were retrieved, and 244 repeated articles were excluded by title, year of publication, and author information. Then after reading abstracts and full-text screening, 311 articles that did not meet the criteria were excluded and finally included 18 studies [9–26] (Fig. 1).…”

“…Ten studies [9–16,18,25] provided 6-month OS rate data, of which 5 studies [9,11,14,18,25] were TACE plus lenvatinib versus TACE alone, and the other 5 studies [10,12,13,15,16] were TACE plus lenvatinib versus lenvatinib alone. Based on the heterogeneity test results ( P = .95, I 2 = 0%; P = .52, I 2 = 0%).…”

“…Moreover, tumor cells were killed after TACE, which made the remaining non-proliferative cells enter the proliferative phase, and the tumor cell cycle was synchronized, which was helpful for γ -rays released by I 125 particles to kill cycle-sensitive cells 48 . Furthermore, vascular endothelial cells have strong proliferation ability and are sensitive to radiation 49 . After implantation of I 125 radioactive particles, radiation directly causes damage to vascular endothelial cells, the expression of VEGF is decreased, and the angiogenesis is reduced, thus inhibiting the formation of tumor neovascularization 50 .…”

“…Studies have shown that biliary stents combined with 125 I seed implantation could prolong stent patency and improve survival time for patients with cholangiocarcinoma[ 22 , 24 ]. Furthermore, studies[ 25 , 26 ] have shown that compared with transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) alone, 125 I seed implantation combined with TACE can better control the tumor and improve the survival time for liver cancer patients. The treatment of residual liver cancer near complex sites after TACE is challenging, but 125 I seed implantation is effective and safe for patients[ 27 ].…”
