Hydrogels for absorbing metal ions in wastewater have attracted more attentions in the environmental field especially for recent years. The removal efficiency of hydrogel adsorbents for eliminating metal ions is highly related with the effective contact between adsorbents and adsorbates. However, poor water absorption capacity of the hydrogel adsorbents would restrict on the expose of adsorption sites to the targeted subjects, causing undesirable removal ratio (RR) especially for metal ions at trace level. Thereby, the reported hydrogel adsorbents mainly focus on the removal of high content but not the trace level of metal ions so far. In this work, poly(acrylamide) (PAM)/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/Ca(OH)2 composite hydrogel is applied to adsorb trace metal ions. Swelling ratio of such PAM/PAA/Ca(OH)2 gel reaches 2,530 g/g, resulting in effective exposure of active sites and further expected RR for trace metal ions. The RRs of such adsorbent for Cu2+ (initial concentration C0 = 0.064 mg/L), Al3+ (C0 = 0.27 mg/L), Co2+ (C0 = 0.59 mg/L), Cr6+ (C0 = 0.52 mg/L), Mn2+ (C0 = 0.55 mg/L), Ni2+ (C0 = 0.59 mg/L), Zn2+ (C0 = 0.65 mg/L), Ag+ (C0 = 1.08 mg/L), and La3+ (C0 = 1.39 mg/L) are 56.6, 80.8, 41.3, 29.3, 34.6, 44.6, 55.9, 45.8, and 35.5%, respectively. This work broadens the application of hydrogel adsorbent for eliminating trace metal ions from polluted water.

BACKGROUND An alternative carboxymethyl cellulose‐based biosorbent hydrogel was synthesized by grafting 2‐acrylamido‐2‐methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) onto the prepared carboxymethyl cellulose backbone via microwave heating. Response surface methodology was employed to optimize the hydrogel synthesis condition for maximum gel content with respect to AMPS dose, N,N′‐methylene‐bis‐acrylamide dose, and microwave exposure time. The prepared gels were then characterized and evaluated in terms of their heavy metal ions adsorption performance and reusability. RESULTS The optimum synthesis condition yielded the maximum gel content and maximum equilibrium swelling of 96.33% and 2819 ± 15%, respectively. The Langmuir model fitted the experimental isotherm data well, with maximum adsorption capacity of 86.21, 102.04 and 33.56 mg g‐1 for Cu2+, Pb2+ and Fe3+, respectively. Microwave heating was clearly noted to result in hydrogel of higher porosity and could shorten the synthesis time by 88.33%; the gel content was 7.46% higher compared with that obtained via conventional heating. CONCLUSION Microwave‐assisted heating is a feasible alternative and an efficient technique for CMC‐g‐AMPS hydrogel synthesis. The optimized CMC‐g‐AMPS hydrogel exhibited good performance for Cu2+, Pb2+ and Fe3+ ions removal and was satisfactorily reused, thus contributing to the alleviation of environmental problems caused by discarded rice straw and water contaminated with heavy metal ions. © 2017 Society of Chemical Industry

In the progress of red‐winemaking, eco‐friendly, facile, and efficient reutilization of grape pomace is an important issue for sustainable industrial processes. In this manuscript, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as extensive and expensive nanomaterials, are efficiently extracted from grape pomace by using deep eutectic solvents. Moreover, the obtained CNCs as the renewable reinforcing agent are successfully fabricated of self‐healing nanocomposite hydrogels. The self‐healing (93.5%) and mechanical strength (4.77 MPa) in hydrogels are outstandingly improved by the addition of functional CNCs, in which abundant carboxyl functional groups are modified by in situ esterification in the process of extracting CNCs. Importantly, these strain‐sensitive and self‐healing nanocomposite hydrogels can be further used as flexible strain sensors to detect human motion.
