Enhanced sensitivity of optical fiber vibration sensor based on radio-frequency Michelson interferometer

Abstract: We propose and demonstrate a new scheme for enhancing the sensitivity of an optical fiber vibration sensor based on microwave interferometry, which is realized by an incoherent optical Michelson interferometer (MI). The sensing arm of the MI is sensitive to environmental vibration; this will cause changes in the phase of the reflection spectra in the microwave domain. The phase sensitivity can be improved by adjusting the power ratio of the two beams in the interferometer and… Show more

“…Among them, optical fiber vibration sensors based on MZI and MI, with double interference arms, can perform local or large range detection [10], [11] . Compared with MZI, MI is simpler and smaller [12] . With the same fiber length, the sensitivity can be twice that of MZI.…”

“…4 Based on radio-frequency, a sensitivity enhanced optical fiber vibration sensor has been proposed via Michelson interferometer. 5 By virtue of nested pulsed method, Sagnac vibration sensing system has the possibility to locate the actual vibration with limited frequency band. 6 Backscattering-based optical fiber vibration sensor is used for monitoring the perturbation events by measuring the variation of scattered light intensity in the fiber.…”

“…Microwave photonics (MWP), an emerging interdisciplinary subject, has undergone tremendous growth and advancements over the past two decades [ 14 , 15 , 16 ], and has found successful applications in signal generation [ 17 ], signal processing [ 18 ], as well as sensing [ 19 , 20 ]. Of particular relevance here, various fiber optic sensors based on different MWP interrogation methods were developed recently, such as MWP-filtering techniques [ 21 , 22 , 23 ], optical-carrier-based microwave interferometry [ 16 , 24 ], optoelectronic oscillators [ 25 , 26 ], phase-shift amplified interferometry [ 27 , 28 ], etc. In this paper, we propose and demonstrate MWP fiber ring resonators.…”
