Series-compensated transmission lines (SCTLs) are increasingly preferred for transmitting bulk amounts of electricity generated from the present-day large-scale wind farm to the utility grid due to several technical and economic benefits. However, when a fault occurs in such a wind farm-integrated SCTL, the impedance across the metal oxide varistor (MOV)-protected series capacitor varies non-linearly. Also, the fault current contributed from the wind farm side is quite different compared to the grid side. Consequently, the widely used fixed impedance-based distance relaying schemes showed limitations when used for protecting such crucial TLs. In this paper, the impacts of series compensation and wind farm integration on distance relay are investigated, and this paper proposes an intelligent relaying scheme using only the current measurements. In the proposed scheme, the fault detection task is performed using the signs of the half-cycle magnitude differences of the line end positive-sequence currents, and the fault classification task is performed using only the local current measurements processed through the Fourier–Bessel series expansion (FBSE) bagging ensemble (BE) classifier. The non-stationary components present in the current signal at the initiation of a fault are captured by calculating FBSE coefficients, and the singular value decomposition is applied for dimensionality reduction of the feature set. Finally, the extracted features are used by the BE classifier for fault classification. The method is evaluated in MATLAB/Simulink® on numerous fault and non-fault data simulated in two-bus systems and also validated through the OPAL-RT (OP4510) manufactured real-time digital simulation platform. The obtained results (response time for fault detection and classification <10 ms), including the comparative assessment results (fault detection accuracy =100% and fault classification accuracy =99.37%), justify the effectiveness of the proposed relaying scheme in protecting the wind farm-integrated SCTLs.

There are many design problems need to be optimized in various fields of engineering, and most of them belong to the NP-hard problem. The meta-heuristic algorithm is one kind of optimization method and provides an effective way to solve the NP-hard problem. Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is a nature-inspired algorithm that mimics and mathematically models the behavior of slap swarm in nature. However, similar to most of the meta-heuristic algorithms, the traditional SSA has some shortcomings, such as entrapment in local optima. In this paper, the three main strategies are adopted to strengthen the basic SSA, including chaos theory, sine-cosine mechanism and the principle of quantum computation. Therefore, the SSA variant is proposed in this research, namely SCQ-SSA. The representative benchmark functions are employed to test the performances of the algorithms. The SCQ-SSA are compared with the seven algorithms in high-dimensional functions (1000 dimensions), seven SSA variants and six advanced variants on benchmark functions, the experiment reveals that the SCQ-SSA enhances resulting precision and alleviates local optimal problems. Besides, the SCQ-SSA is applied to resolve three classical engineering problems: tubular column design problem, tension/compression spring design problem and pressure vessel design problem. The design results indicate that these engineering problems are optimized with high accuracy and superiority by the improved SSA. SummaryMulti‐output converters have been accepted in many portable and display applications due to their ability to optimize hardware both in terms of number of switches as well as on the inductances. Many of these applications require the input voltage to be both stepped up and stepped down, and some applications also require negative outputs. This paper proposes a non‐isolated converter topology which can generate positive buck and boost outputs and also a negative output using a coupled inductor. The converter can operate in continuous and discontinuous conduction modes (DCMs). A detailed analysis of the converter is done in both modes, and it is shown that the outputs can be controlled by direct real‐time analytical estimation of the duty cycle in DCM. Coupled inductor enables the possibility that more than one output can be simultaneously supplied, reducing the cycle time and increasing throughput. Independent control of all three outputs confirms that cross‐regulation is avoided due to real‐time continuous estimation of the duty cycles. The proposed converter is verified by building a hardware model for multi‐output voltages of 5, 24, and −5 V with an input voltage of 12 V using a Spartan‐6 FPGA controller. Experimental results validate that 94% converter efficiency and regulated output voltages under full load conditions. Steady state and dynamic performance of the converter illustrate the effect of suggested control technique to alleviate cross‐regulation in multi‐output converters.
