Enhanced properties of starch based foams with modified starch/polyester blend as masterbatch

Abstract: Starch/PBAT blends were reactively extruded as masterbatch with the addition of tartaric acid (TA) and epoxide chain extender ADR4468 (ADR). The effects of tartaric acid and chain extender on the mechanical properties and structure of starch/PBAT blends were evaluated. The tensile strength of starch/PBAT blends with TA and TA/ADR increased by 31.4% and 85.6%, respectively. Further, starch, plasticizer, and blowing agent were melt extruded with this blend masterbatch, and the effects of masterbatch on the foama… Show more

“…Although, starch has good foam-forming ability and is odorless, colorless, non-toxic, and biodegradable, it is also sensitive to water, and starch foam has poor mechanical properties. 3 As a result, most studies of starch foam have concentrated on solving these drawbacks. The challenge lies in developing high-performance properties without increasing the cost of the starch foam product.…”

“…The versatility of starch is seen in the numerous applications of the material, but there are few applications of starch foam packaging compared to starch film packaging. Although, starch has good foam‐forming ability and is odorless, colorless, non‐toxic, and biodegradable, it is also sensitive to water, and starch foam has poor mechanical properties 3 . As a result, most studies of starch foam have concentrated on solving these drawbacks.…”
