Stingless bees are common visitor to flowering plants in the tropics, and play a vital role as a pollinator both in open and closed environment. The present study was carried out to know the efficiency of stingless bee, Tetragonula iridipennis Smith on bell pepper, Capsicum annum cultivated under greenhouses during two seasons, summer (2021) and winter (2021-2022). At the time of flower initiation three stingless bee colonies were introduced inside the greenhouse. The peak activity of outgoing foragers recorded at 11.00 h to 12.00 h (12.90 bees/m2/10 min) during summer. In winter, activity of bees was maximum at 11:00 h to 12:00 h (11.35 bees/m2/10 min). The floral handling time of bees on flower in both the seasons, irrespective of the hours in a day, the maximum flower handling time was observed in the afternoon hours (44.60 s/flower) compared to forenoon hours (20.57 s/flower). Even in often cross pollinated bell pepper significant increase in number of fruits/plant (10.40 and 8.98), percentage of fruit set (90.04 % and 81.86 %), yield/plant (0.71 g and 0.46 g), fruit length (7.38 mm and 6.50 mm), fruit girth (22.86 mm and 19.43 mm), fruit weight (98.38 g and 83.08 g), TSS (5.20 % and 4.52 %), ascorbic content (93.64 mg/100 g and 89.15 mg/100 g) and moisture content (95.37 % and 40.93 %) was recorded between bee pollinated and control plots, respectively.

Pollination in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) was studied using stingless bees, Tetragonula iridipennis Smith and honey bee, Apis cerana F. Data on the resource partitioning revealed the foraging activity of pollinators. Pollination efficiency index was observed to be maximum with A. cerana (24) followed by T. iridipennis (14), and significantly maximum fruit set (81.66 and 78.97%) was obtained with their pollination. An increase of 87.48% in fruit set, 46.47% in healthy fruits and 275.23% in seed numbers was noticed, with longer (17.85 and 17.22 cm) and heavier (0.415 and 0.411 kg) fruits in the A. cerana and T. iridipennis pollinated plots. Maximum number of healthy fruits was achieved with bee pollination as compared to open pollination and control, and A. cerana showed more mortality as compared to T. iridipennis. .

Grande parte das culturas agrícolas necessita dos serviços ecossistêmicos de polinização realizados por diversos organismos, em especial as abelhas. No presente estudo são estimados os valores referentes à Valoração dos Serviços de Polinização Animal (VESP) nos cultivos de municípios da Região Metropolitana de Curitiba (RMC), a partir de dados de produção obtidos pela Secretaria da Agricultura e Abastecimento do estado do Paraná (2016-2020) e do coeficiente de dependência de cada cultivo pela polinização animal. O VESP para a RMC foi estimado em média R$382,4 milhões por ano em valores de 2020, sendo deste valor a maior parte oriunda do cultivo da soja, que correspondeu a R$230 milhões. Quanto aos demais cultivos, tomate, maçã, pepino, morango, abóbora e feijão mostraram os maiores montantes de VESP em ordem decrescente,. Os municípios com maiores valores, excluindo-se a soja, foram Rio Negro com R$24 milhões/ano, Cerro Azul com R$21 milhões/ano e Lapa com R$20 milhões/ano. Os municípios de maior número de cultivos com dependência essencial de polinzadores (95%) são Cerro Azul que produz R$6 milhões/ano, Colombo com R$5 milhões/ano e Tijucas do Sul com R$5 milhões/ano também. O VESP da soja não é influenciado pela área natural de cada município, por outro lado o VESP dos demais cultivos é impactado pela área natural circundante. Os dados aqui obtidos demonstram a importância econômica regional do serviço de polinização, o qual deve ser considerado na elaboração de políticas públicas de produção de alimentos e de conservação da natureza.
