Enhanced photoluminescence of ZnO∕Er2O3 core-shell structure nanorods synthesized by pulsed laser deposition

Abstract: A narrow size distribution of ZnO nanorod array has been synthesized on silicon substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) in argon ambient. ZnO∕Er2O3 core-shell nanostructures were then formed through PLD of a thin Er2O3 layer onto the fabricated ZnO nanorod surface. Transmission electron microscopy analysis shows that both the ZnO core and Er2O3 shell are polycrystalline. Photoluminescence measurement was carried out to characterize the optical properties of the core-shell nanostructures. The band diagram of… Show more

“…When the coating time increases during the first 50 s, this study's results are similar to those of studies of surface modification in PL measurement. 25,26 During the deposition process of TiO 2 coating on ZnO NWs, TiO 2 NPs can interact with surface defects of the ZnO NWs. This will change the defect states and lead to the passivation of surface defect activity.…”

“…Type-II core-shell structures with different band alignments, such as TiO 2 /ZnO, ZnO/Er 2 O 3 , ZnO/ZnS, V 2 O 5 /ZnO, ZnSe/CdS or ZnO/CdTe, have been reported [11][12][13][14][15][16]. Those core-shell structures show adding light emission or enhanced efficiency of solar cells.…”

“…For example, some researchers utilized metal layer to cap the ZnO thin film; the ultraviolet emission can be enhanced when the emission energy of ZnO matches closely with the surface plasma of metal layer. What is more, other researchers adopted some metal oxides to modify the surface of ZnO materials [6][7][8] and the ultraviolet emission is also enhanced. In these metal oxides, TiO 2 is an important material, which has some characteristics similar to ZnO [9].…”
