Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue dye using eco-friendly synthesized rGO@ZnO nanocomposites

Asfaw Negash,
Said Mohammed,
Hulugirgesh Degefu Weldekirstos
et al.

Abstract: Industrial chemical pollutants such as methylene blue (MB) dye are released into the water body and potentially cause harm to the human and aquatic biosphere. Therefore, this study aims to synthesize eco-friendly nanocatalysts, i.e., reduced graphene oxide (rGO), zinc oxide (ZnO), and reduced graphene oxide-zinc oxide (rGO@ZnO) nanocomposites, for efficient photocatalytic degradation of MB dye. A graphite rod was obtained from waste dry cell batteries for the electrochemical exfoliation synthesis of graphene o… Show more

“…This charge carrier separation reduces recombination. Moreover, changes in the work functions of GO and ZnO facilitated electron acceptance from ZnO, further minimizing charge recombination . Consequently, the surplus charge carriers reached the surface of GO/g-C 3 N 4 /ZnO, where they plausibly engaged with water to generate hydroxyls and radicals .…”

“…Moreover, changes in the work functions of GO and ZnO facilitated electron acceptance from ZnO, further minimizing charge recombination. 52 Consequently, the surplus charge carriers reached the surface of GO/g-C 3 N 4 /ZnO, where they plausibly engaged with water to generate hydroxyls and radicals. 53 The ensuing interaction with MB led to an amplified degradation of the dye, highlighting the efficiency of the photocatalytic process.…”

“…Hussain et al [46] biosynthesized olive fruit extract-based zinc oxide (ZnO@OFE) NPs and achieved 75% and 87% photocatalytic degradation of MB and methyl orange (MO) under sunlight irradiation within 180 min. Negash et al [47] synthesized reduced graphene oxide (rGO), zinc oxide (ZnO), and reduced graphene oxide-zinc oxide (rGO@ZnO) to achieve efficient photodegradation of MB. The photocatalytic degradation of MB was performed using direct sunlight irradiation.…”
