Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and adsorption of arsenic(iii) by reduced graphene oxide (rGO)–metal oxide (TiO2/Fe3O4) based nanocomposites

Abstract: Hazardous methylene blue dye and As(iii) ions from wastewater are removed by the rGO and TiO2/Fe3O4 based binary and ternary nanocomposites, where ternary rGO–Fe3O4–TiO2 nanocomposite provides maximum degradation and adsorption of the pollutants.

“…Figure shows the FTIR patterns of RGO and GO. The spectrum of GO showed typical absorption bands associated with COC at 875 cm −1 , CO at 1056 cm −1 , OH at 1205 cm −1 , CC at 1629 cm −1 , CO at 1725 cm −1 , and OH at 3418 cm −1 . These bands are indicative of the abundant oxygen‐containing functional groups, which principally appear when graphite is transformed into GO.…”

“…The spectrum of GO showed typical absorption bands associated with C-O-C at 875 cm −1 , C-O at 1056 cm −1 , O-H at 1205 cm −1 , C¼C at 1629 cm −1 , C¼O at 1725 cm −1 , and -OH at 3418 cm −1 . 27,28 These bands are indicative of the abundant oxygen-containing functional groups, which principally appear when graphite is transformed into GO. Oxygen-related bands in the spectrum of RGO become weak and even vanish, suggesting a reduction reaction resulting in the removal of oxygenated groups.…”

“…The peak at 3279.42 cm −1 depicts the stretching vibration of the O‐H group . The weak peaks at about 1200–1500 cm −1 are related to C‐O stretching vibrations, which confirms the low quantity of GO in the sample …”

“…Apart from the observed shifts, the profile of the peak corresponding to D band is significantly changed, while the peak profile of G band is broadened for rGO in the hybrids as compared to the bare rGO. In general, a weak D band represents the low density of defects, whereas the crystal structure, disorder and defects can be characterized with the change in relative intensity of D and G peaks . Accordingly, the intensity ratio of the bands ( I D / I G ) gives a qualitative measure of disorders in the material.…”
