Enhanced photocatalytic activity of cobalt-doped CeO2 nanorods

Cubic ZrMo 2-x V x O 8-x/2 (0 B x B 0.5) compounds, with well-defined nanorods morphology, were synthesized by a facile sol-gel process without using any surfactant or template. The resulting products were characterized by the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, thermal mechanical analyzer and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS). The results indicated that V-doping did not influence the crystal structure and negative thermal expansion (NTE) property, but made rods size increase. Narrowed band gap was observed in V-doped ZrMo 2 O 8 . The resultant V-doped ZrMo 2 O 8 samples, as compared with pure ZrMo 2 O 8 , exhibited improved UV-light photocatalytic activity, during the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B. The mechanism was supposed that the V-doping gave rise to the formation of oxygen vacancies which could enhance photocatalytic performance by reducing the recombination of electrons and holes. In addition, cubic ZrMo 2-x V x O 8-x/2 also displayed reliable recycling photocatalytic performance and satisfying UVlight catalytic activity for the organic pollutant. Furthermore, all of the resulting cubic ZrMo 2-x V x O 8-x/2 showed excellent NTE property from 25 to 450°C. Synthesis of Co‐doped CeO₂ nanorods modified glassy carbon electrode for electrochemical detection of nitrobenzene

CeO2 nanoparticles (CNPs), Co‐doped CeO2 nanoparticles (CCNPs) and Co‐doped CeO2 nanorods (CCNRs) were synthesized by simple co‐precipitation method and explored their sensing behaviour towards nitrobenzene. XRD and TEM analysis confirmed the presence of cubic fluorite structure of the CNPs, CCNPs and CCNRs. EDX analysis confirmed the presence of Cobalt in CeO2 nanorods. The electrochemical sensing of nitrobenzene was carried out using CCNRs‐modified glassy carbon (GC) electrodes by means of cyclic voltammetric (CV) technique. The peak current (Ip) was found to be linearly co‐related to nitrobenzene (NB) concentration (R2 = 0.9665). A substantial enhancement in cathodic peak current (C1), and sensitivity (∼738.8 nA/μM) was observed for the CCNRs‐modified GC electrode than those of CNPs and CCNPs‐modified electrodes.

Interface Crystallization of Ceria in Porous Silica Films for Solar Applications

Antireflective (AR) coatings with photocatalytic activity for solar cover glasses are extensively investigated at present, mostly in multilayer systems including titania. In this study, bifunctional single coats from porous silica in combination with up to 33 mol % ceria were prepared by sol-gel dip-coating on low-iron soda-lime float glass. After heat treatment for one hour at 350 • C, the coated glasses were characterized. Solar transmittance decreased with increasing ceria content, whereas photocatalytic activity increases. Crystallization of cubic ceria was detected by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. Chemical depth profiling by secondary neutral mass spectrometry revealed the enrichment of cerium at the coating surface as well as at the interface to the glass substrate. Self-assembled ceria crystallization at the interfaces resulted in a three-layered mesostructure of the coating, which was verified by field-emission scanning electron spectroscopy. Cubic ceria crystals at the interface act as a barrier for the sodium diffusion from the substrate, which prevents the poisoning of the photocatalyst, while those crystals at the surface act as an electron donor for photooxidation processes, both enabling adequate photocatalytic activity. The triple-layer architecture with the sequence of high/low/high refractive index materials allows for optical interference sustaining the AR-function.
