Enhanced performance of dye-sensitized solar cells with dual-function coadsorbent: reducing the surface concentration of dye–iodine complexes concomitant with attenuated charge recombination

Abstract: In this paper, we have investigated the effects of oleic acid as a dual-function coadsorbent on recombination and iodine binding in dye-sensitized solar cells. Oleic acid as a dual-function coadsorbent effectively shields the back electron transfer from TiO2 to I3(-) ions and also reduces the surface concentration of dye-I2 complexes via iodine binding to the unsaturated double bond on oleic acid. It was found that interaction between iodine and the double bond of oleic acid keeps the iodine molecules away fro… Show more

“…A photocathode electrode was prepared by cascading 50mM H 2 PtCl 6 .6H 2 O on the FTO glass substrate and allowing it to cover the surface. Then, the coated plates were fired in a convection oven at about 400°C for about 15 minutes . Also, in order to investigate the effect of enhancement of the magnetic nanofiller in the polymeric vinyl acetate network on photovoltaic parameters of different electrolyte colored cells with the optimization of nanofiller percentages were made.…”

“…Adding co-adsorbents such as chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), phosphonic acid, and other co-adsorbents is known to improve the efficiency of DSSCs . It is assumed that the reason for the increase in efficiency is the change in conformation, in terms of a reduced tendency to aggregation, of the dye layer due to the presence of the co-adsorbent …”

“…Mazloum-Ardakani and Khoshroo demonstrated that the oleic acid (OA) prevents the charge recombination and reduces the surface concentration of dye-iodine complex via saturating the π-bond of OA by iodine present in the electrolyte. 17 OA-capped TiO 2 was used in DSSC along with resorcinol-based Ru(II)–Re(I) complexes and higher electron lifetimes were observed because of the resorcinol binding. 18 Recently, OA has also been shown as a blue emitter and a sensitizer of rare-earth luminescent centers when anchored over different oxide surfaces.…”
