Enhanced One-Photon Cycloreversion Reaction of Diarylethenes near Individual Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract: The photocycloreversion reaction of a diarylethene upon irradiation with visible light was found to be accelerated in proximity to a gold nanoparticle covered with diarylethene polymers (Au-poly(DE)) dispersed in a solution. Enhancement of the reaction rate by the gold nanoparticle was quantitatively evaluated by kinetic analysis on the basis of absorption spectroscopy. Multicomponent bleaching of the closed-ring form of poly(DE) was observed around the gold nanoparticle upon irradiation with visible light; th… Show more

“…Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have long been generally employed as PA‐imaging contrast agents due to the LSPR effect, which allows their adjustable and excellent optical absorption . In addition, AuNPs can attain high photothermal conversion effect upon laser illumination and are highly biocompatible, have good chemical inertness, excellent physiochemical properties, and a high extinction coefficient . AuNPs have been synthesized as nanorods, nanoprisms, nanocages, nanospheres, nanostars, nanodisks, bipyramids and rhombic dodecahedra, nanoplates, nanoshells, nanotripods, and nanowreaths …”

“…The position of the absorption band of the local surface plasmon resonance strongly depends on the size of the Au particles [134]. The photocycloreversible reaction is enhanced in the vicinity of the Au nanoparticle [135].…”

“…In this field of research, the organic unit can be molecules showing different photophysical properties such as fluorescence, photochromism, or Raman scattering. Even if there are fewer published reports, coupling plasmonic nanoparticles with photochromic molecules present many advantages [4,5]. Many different behaviors of this coupling have been observed: it can lead to either (i) a decrease of the photochromic activity [6,7] and even an irreversibility of the photoreaction [8,9], or (ii) an improvement of the photoswitching efficiency [10][11][12].…”

“…Two parameters seem to have a great importance to modify this coupling. The first one is the distance between the metallic nanoparticle and the photochromic unit [5,10]. The second parameter is the overlap between the SPR band and the electronic transition of the photochromic unit [13,14].…”
