Enhanced new production observed from the diurnal cycle of nitrate in an oligotrophic anticyclonic eddy

Abstract: Abstract. A diurnal study in an anticyclonic eddy provides the first evidence of nutrient dynamics consistent with the observed trends in solar radiation, oxygen concentration changes, and estimates of the eddy diffusive flux of nitrate from nitracline. A new production rate of 24 mmol C m -2 d 'l was determined from nitrate inventory changes at nM levels in the mixed layer using a liquid waveguide technique combined with eddy diffusion estimates across the base of the mixed layer from temporal changes in the … Show more

“…, 1997). The eddy habitat produces locally elevated chlorophyll and zooplankton abundance, and mechanically affects local aggregation of prey organisms (Owen, 1981; Zhang et al. , 2001), and thereby stimulates feeding conditions (Logerwell and Smith, 2001).…”

“…The mixed layer reduction in nC T was then corrected for the C T difference in the ratio of C T flux and that calculated using the concurrent flux of NO 3 − multiplied by a C:N ratio of 7 (Table S1). During the warming period, the mixed layer generally shoals but intermittent entrainment (e.g., caused by eddies and storms) also occurs due to short periods of wind‐induced mixed layer deepening (McGillicuddy et al, ; Zhang et al, ). The effect of the entrainment process on the mixed layer nC T budget would be similar to that of the diffusive flux.…”

“…NH4+, NO3 and NO2 of culture samples were analyzed following the manual procedure of Hansen and Koroleff (). The NO3 content was analyzed using a cadmium column (Lachat, Wisconsin, U.S.A.); during our sample analyses the reduction efficiency of the column was maintained at 95% or higher, which met the performance level recommended for the column (Zhang et al ). No NH4+ was detected.…”
