Enhanced Modelling Framework for Equivalent Circuit-Based Power System State Estimation

Abstract: The equivalent split-circuit formulation is a novel approach that has recently been applied to a range of power system related problems. As a result, a linear and a nonlinear method for power system state estimation with simultaneous treatment of the conventional and synchrophasor measurements have been proposed. In this paper, new circuit models are introduced for different combinations of conventional measurements, thus providing a complete modelling framework for these methods. Additionally, handling cases … Show more

“…To achieve a linear measurement model that guarantees computational efficiency using WLAV, the authors propose a linearization approach for nonlinear measurements using first-order Taylor series expansion. The authors in [21] , [22] , [23] , [24] , [25] , [26] propose an integrated linear HSE, an approach that is derived based on the equivalent split-circuit formulation for the power flow problem. The authors introduce new circuit models relating to the RTU and PMU measurements to formulate a linear measurement model.…”

“…The main idea of the algorithm proposed in [13] is that the entire system, including the available measurements, is modelled by an equivalent circuit. Therefore, all power network components, as well as different sets of PMU and RTU measurements that can potentially be available at a bus, are modelled by the appropriate circuit models [26]. Then, the states are estimated by solving an optimisation problem with linear equality constraints, which essentially represent governing equations of the system's equivalent circuit.…”

“…Contrary to the circuit‐based estimator, the PMU measurements are taken into account individually, hence without any slack components. Also, even though the RTU measurements are initially modelled using a similar approach as in the circuit‐based estimator, their treatment within the WLS framework is substantially simpler compared to the case when circuit models are used, especially when the complex circuit models from [26] are taken into account. The only variables in the proposed algorithm are the system states, i.e.…”

“…Te power system dispatching center makes corresponding decisions according to the system operation conditions provided by the power system state estimation, so the state estimation is directly related to the safe operation of the power grid. How to obtain state estimation software with superior performance has been one of the goals of engineering and academic circles for many years [4][5][6].…”
