“…This difference may have arisen from a charge screening effect caused by the excess cations, which resulted in an imperfect anion–anion electrostatic repulsion and a decreased osmotic pressure between the inside and outside of the network . Meanwhile, the effect of various cations on the swelling of sample were in the order Ca 2+ < Mg 2+ < Na + < K + , respectively; this was in accordance with research by Feng . Moreover, the curve of the water absorbency of the monovalent cationic salt solution was flatter than those of the divalent cationic salt solution because of the complexation ability of the multivalent cationic solutions.…”

“…3 Meanwhile, the effect of various cations on the swelling of sample were in the order Ca 2+ < Mg 2+ < Na + < K + , respectively; this was in accordance with research by Feng. 33 Moreover, the curve of the water absorbency of the monovalent cationic salt solution was flatter than those of the divalent cationic salt solution because of the complexation ability of the multivalent cationic solutions. A possible explanation is that the ionic crosslinking points in the polymer networks were generated by the complexation of carboxylate and carboxamide groups with polyvalent cations; this led to a denser network structure, which was the decisive factor in the poor swelling capacity.…”

“…Initially, the rate of solvent absorption increases and then reaches to plateau. Dynamic swelling behavior can be expressed using a Voigt model which consists of a spring and dashpot in parallel: St=Setrue(1normalet/τtrue) where S t and S e are swelling at time t and equilibrium (g/g), respectively. t denotes time of swelling (in day) at S t .…”

“…Solvent uptake ratio of the swollen networks was determined according to eq. : Swelling ratio true(SRtrue)=true(WsWdtrue)/Wd where W d and W s denote the weights of crosslinked network of PFA in dry and swollen state, respectively. Equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR) was also determined according to eq.…”

“…In Figure 2, the IR spectrum of MCM was very similar to that of CSM, indicating that the introduction of magnetic particles did not destroy the function groups of chitosan. For CSM, the peak at 3366 cm −1 resulted from axial stretching vibration of O-H superimposed on the N-H stretching band and intermolecular hydrogen bonds of the polysaccharide [33], and the adsorption peaks at 2919 and 2874 cm −1 are assigned to the stretching vibration of C-H. The typical band of primary amine groups (-NH 2 ) appears at 1655 cm -1 [34].…”
