Enhanced mechanical properties of carbon fibre/lithium aluminosilicate composites modified by SiB6 addition

Abstract: Carbon fibre-reinforced lithium aluminosilicate matrix composites (C f /LAS) with different SiB 6 contents were prepared by the hot pressing method to assess their mechanical properties and oxidation resistance. Composite that was incorporated with 2 wt-% SiB 6 exhibited the highest flexural strength of 500 ± 22.3 MPa. Weight loss and residual strength of C f /LAS modified by SiB 6 were analysed. The results indicated that the addition of SiB 6 had a remarkable effect on improving the oxidation resistance for … Show more

“…The XRD spectrum of the SiBOC after heating in air at 1300 o C for 90 min shows peaks corresponding to SiO 2 and B 2 O 3 as depicted in Figure S2, supplementary information. The resultant glass phases from SiO 2 and B 2 O 3 are known to act as sealants for cracks and pores in the matrix [46]. Thus, the improvement in compressive strength of the oxidised samples can be attributed to the sharp cracks converting to blunt/rounded pores and the sealing of some of the micro-cracks.…”

“…The addition of 2 wt-% SiB 6 in LAS/C f composite (unidirectionally aligned PAN-based C f with approximate 35–40 vol.-%) which in turn creates a continuous, moderate CTE borosilicate glass interface to attain flexural strength of 500 MPa [239]. The dispersed crack propagation from the LAS matrix to carbon fibre due to the existence of multiplayer interface was found to be the cause for the improved fracture toughness (19.4 MPa m 1/2 ).…”

“…Carbon fibres have attractive properties such as low density, high tensile modulus and strength, and low thermal expansion coefficient [1], which are often compounded with a matrix such as ceramic [2,3], metal [4,5] or resin [6,7] to form structural composites. Structural composites are currently considered a potential material widely applied in thermal protection systems [8].…”
