Enhanced low field magnetoresistive response in (La2/3Sr1/3MnO3)x/(CeO2)1−x composite thick films prepared by screen printing

Abstract: The magnetoresistance and magnetization of (La2/3Sr1/3MnO3)x(LSMO)/(CeO2)1−x (0.64⩽x⩽1) composite thick films have been studied as a function of the manganite concentration. It is found that for high LSMO content, when the applied magnetic field is perpendicular to the film plane, the attainable low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) response is drastically reduced due to demagnetizing field effects. These effects are suppressed when the concentration of CeO2 is increased, thus an enhancement of the LFMR is observ… Show more

“…[1][2][3][4] In addition to the intrinsic MR effect, polycrystalline samples display an extrinsic MR effect due to the presence of grain boundaries. [3][4][5][6] Several groups 7,8 have shown that the extrinsic MR is enhanced by preparing composites of a magnetoresistive manganite and an insulating secondary phase. The insulating phase acts as an additional barrier to the conduction at the grain boundaries and increases the percolating conduction path.…”

“…Recently, the enhanced LFMR effects in the LSMOinsulating oxide composite films have also been reported in the literature [19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]. However, reported LFMR values of the composite films were less that 1% at room temperature and thus insufficient for real applications, which motivated present study.…”

“…In the families of compounds here discussed (manganites and FeMo double perovskites) we have shown [19] that a double exchange mechanism operates. That means that the ferromagnetic coupling between the orientations of localized atomic moments (S=3/2 in 3d 3 in manganites or S=5/2 in 3d 5 in SFMO) is mediated by the itinerant carriers of the conduction band.…”
