Enhanced Linkage of Summer Drought in Southern China to the North Pacific Oscillation Since 2000

Abstract: Southern China, an economically developed region with a large population, has suffered from frequent occurrence of droughts in recent decades, which caused serious challenges to agriculture production, forest-fire prevention, and human lives (W. Li et al., 2022;C. Sun & Yang, 2012;Q. Zhang et al., 2019). It is thus of great value to improve our understanding on the variability and underlying physical mechanisms of droughts in southern China for the aim of disaster prevention and mitigation.A number of studies … Show more

“…Their substantial effects on NPO and WPNC are also worthy of further exploration. In addition, the relationship between NPO and precipitation in China during other seasons may also be influenced by various atmospheric systems (Ding et al, 2015(Ding et al, , 2018Han et al, 2023;Hu et al, 2023;Li et al, 2019;Pu et al, 2019;. It would be valuable to investigate whether the eastward shift of the NPO exists in other seasons, as well as its impact on precipitation.…”

“…The NPO's southern lobe is near the Hawaiian Islands, and the northern lobe is close to the Aleutian Islands (Wang et al, 2011). The winter NPO not only influence the climate of North America in its downstream (Baxter & Nigam, 2015; Furtado et al, 2012; Lee et al, 2015; Rogers, 1981; Sung et al, 2019) but also the climate of East Asia in its upstream (Chen & Song, 2018; Ding et al, 2015, 2018; Han et al, 2023; Hu et al, 2023; Li & He, 2016; Li et al, 2019; Pu et al, 2019; Sun & Li, 2022; Sung et al, 2021; Tian et al, 2024; Wang & Feng, 2011; Zhou & Xia, 2012).…”

“…Zhou and Xia (2012) suggested that a strong (weak) NPO was followed by decreased (increased) summer precipitation over the Huaihe River valley via modulation of the anomalous cyclone (anticyclone) over the western Pacific and descending (ascending) motion before the mid-1970s, and that this linkage was diluted thereafter. Recently, Hu et al (2023) reported that the NPO is strongly linked to the occurrence of drought anomalies over southern China since the 2000s. They further attributed such intensification of the relation to the westward (southward) extension of the northern (southern) NPO lobe.…”

“…The suppression in monsoonal rainfall poses a serious threat to food production in the SC region. Despite extensive efforts to investigate reduced monsoonal rainfall or drought in SC [35][36][37] , previous studies have provided little to no coverage of the impact of TCs on rainfall suppression in this area. The results are in sharp contrast to the previous studies that highlight the positive contribution of TC rainfall to the rainy season [38][39][40][41] .…”
