Enhanced Gene Expression Rather than Natural Polymorphism in Coding Sequence of the OsbZIP23 Determines Drought Tolerance and Yield Improvement in Rice Genotypes

Abstract: Drought is one of the major limiting factors for productivity of crops including rice (Oryza sativa L.). Understanding the role of allelic variations of key regulatory genes involved in stress-tolerance is essential for developing an effective strategy to combat drought. The bZIP transcription factors play a crucial role in abiotic-stress adaptation in plants via abscisic acid (ABA) signaling pathway. The present study aimed to search for allelic polymorphism in the OsbZIP23 gene across selected drought-tolera… Show more

“…The experiments were performed at both vegetative and reproductive (or grain filling) stages. For T 1 transgenic lines and non-transgenic (NT) plants drought stress treatment at the vegetative and early reproductive (panicle initiation) stages, and analysis of grain yield under drought condition were performed following the reported protocol [ 25 ].…”

“…are important genes expressed in response to drought stress (Rabbani et al, 2003). Overexpression of the OsbZIP23 factor has been found to increase drought tolerance and improve yield in the rice crop under drought stress (Dey et al, 2016). NAC transcription factors also appear to play a prominent role in stress tolerance mechanisms of rice and various other plants.…”

“…Hence, the expression of drought-responsive genes is triggered by this activation of OsbZIP23 57 . Overexpression of OsbZIP23 in rice leads to a drought-tolerant phenotype and increased soluble sugar contents in the leaves of stressed plants 83 . The four β-amylases mentioned above are bound by OsbZIP23.…”
