Enhanced fatigue and durability of carbon black/natural rubber composites reinforced with graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes

Abstract: Graphene oxide (GO) sheets and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are of nanometer size and offer large shape factors which are beneficial in reducing crack propagation rates of composites when used in carbon black (CB) reinforced natural rubber (NR), thereby prolonging the service lives of rubber composites. In this research, CNT-CB/NR and GO-CB/NR composites were prepared by partially replacing CB with one-dimensional CNTs and two-dimensional flaky graphene oxide GO, respectively. The results showed that the complex fi… Show more

“…Butyl rubber and chlorobutyl with 1.25% of chlorine was purchased from Laxness and Bayer, Mumbai. Graphene oxide with a bulk density of 1.8 g/cm 3 and soluble in polar solvents was procured from Sigma Aldrich chemicals, Mumbai. Remaining chemicals like sulphur, zinc oxide, stearic acid [17] , N-cyclohexyl-2-benzothiazyl sulphenamide (CBS) and tetramethylthiuram disulphide (TMTD) [18] were obtained from Loba Chemicals, Chennai.…”

“…Rubber nanocomposites is one of the composites which were developed by several researchers around the world using different rubbers such as natural rubbe r(NR) [2][3][4] , butadiene rubber (BR), butyl rubber (IIR) [5] , chlorobutyl rubber (CIIR) [6,7] , epoxidizednatural rubber (ENR) [8] , styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), styrene butadiene styrene rubber (SBS) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) for various applications. Even though IIR has its own merits and its property was enhanced with reinforcement of various nanosized fillers such as carbon black (CB) [9] , silica, carbon nanotubes [10] , graphene [11,12] , graphene oxide (GO) [13,14] and nanoclay [15] .…”

“…In addition, surface area of CB depends on porosity and also, porosity influences certain industrial applications and properties at higher CB loadings [11]. CB is used as a reinforcing filler for most polymer materials, especially natural and synthetic rubbers, owing to the uniform dispersion of CB in the polymer matrix [13].…”

“…1–3 However, most of the epoxies are inherent brittleness and poor crack resistance. Therefore, different types of nanofillers, including Al 2 O 3 , 4 , 5 Hydroxyapatite (HA), 6–8 SiO 2 , 9 , 10 CNT, 11 GO, 12–14 etc. can improve the different properties of epoxy composites.…”
